What is Title I?
- Title I is a federal program that provides additional funding to schools with a high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged families top help students meet academic standards. Families of children in Title I schools can help by partnering with their school, becoming involved in the school's Title I/parent Involvement planning, and staying in close communication with their child's teacher.
What does Title I provide?
- Funds are used for supplemental educational resources, such as additional teachers or aides, updated teaching materials, and extra support for students who need it. Title I funds are also used to include families in their child's education at Family Workshop nights at Title I schools. These events are typically twice per year (fall and spring). Funding received through Title I coordinates with and supplements the regular education program.
Which Coventry schools are identified as "Title I schools"?
- Blackrock Elementary
- Hopkins Hill Elementary
- Tiogue Elementary
All three of the schools above are classified as "Schoolwide" Title I schools. This means that EVERY student at these schools is eligible to receive additional supports if they are at risk for not meeting grade level expectations. Coventry Public Schools uses multiple sources of data to identify students "at risk". These data sources include, but are not limited to: i-Ready Reading Diagnostic, i-Ready Math Diagnostic, EL Microphases, other progress monitoring tools, and teacher input.
The goals of Schoolwide Title I programs are:
- To improve teaching and learning
- To enable participating students to meet grade level expectations
- To increase parent involvement and empower families to be active partners in their children's education
