The Financial Town Meeting will be held via Zoom at 7:00pm Tuesday, June 8, 2021.
The Town Council recommends that the voters approve a Town/School Budget of $111,763,164 for the Fiscal Year beginning July 1, 2021-2022. Municipal services will receive an appropriation of $31,212,542 from taxes, federal and state aid and other sources for maintaining operations for Police, Public Works, Library, Parks & Recreation, Human Services and general government functions. School services will receive an appropriation of $48,632,182 from tax revenues and $26,774,640 from state aid for a total operating budget of $75,406,822. An appropriation of $5,143,800 from tax revenue, interest earnings, and state aid will be made for the retirement of principal and interest on outstanding bonded indebtedness.
In the current fiscal year 2020-2021, the voters did not approve a budget for the Town of Coventry. The Town has been operating on the same appropriation that was approved for the 2019-2020 fiscal year on June 13, 2019. Service reductions were made in some areas in order to balance the rising costs of goods, services, debts and contracts. Throughout the COVID 19 emergency the budget was challenged with new extraordinary expenses while off-setting costs with changes in reduced services and operations associated with public safety measures. The proposed budget provides a lean and modest return to prior service levels and operations in most areas.
