Print Sound Code

The connection between printed words and spoken language.

Structural Analysis Skills

Analysis of words by identifying prefixes, suffixes, root words, inflectional endings, contractions, compound words, and syllables.

Fluency

Reading aloud with a rhythm that sounds like everyday speech.

Self-corrects

The ability to use strategies the student knows to self-correct while reading.

Comprehension

The ability to understand written language.

Analyzes Text

The student is able to make connections to the text. For example:

  • From the text to his/her own experience

  • From the text to other texts he/she has read

  • From one part of the text to a different part of the text

Reading Habits

The daily practice of reading.

Amount and variety

At least 25 books or book equivalents (e.g. newspapers, magazines, etc.) per year.

Writing Habits and Processes

The daily practice of writing. Student work should be collected and routinely reworked.

Revises Writing

Extends, reworks, and refines pieces of writing.

Edits Writing

Checks for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
