Report Card System Components

Reporting student progress in a standards-based system is a complex task.  Therefore, five components have been developed to support teachers and parents in the meaningful use of this reporting system.

Trimester Report Card:  Four different versions of the elementary report cards have been developed: Kindergarten, Grades 1 & 2, Grade 3, and Grades 4 & 5.  All report card versions use the same basic format.  Wording differences between report cards reflect the developmental level differences relevant to skills and content at kindergarten, primary, and intermediate levels.  These documents are issued every 60 days to all elementary students, K - 5.

Mid-Trimester Progress Report:  The change to a trimester schedule adjusted the district’s official reporting periods to a 60-day cycle rather than the 45-day (quarter) cycle.  During the pilot year, feedback from parents indicated that 60 days was too long to go without a formal contact with the home regarding student progress.  This interim report was created to inform families of student progress halfway through the trimester.  Teachers use a checklist to briefly report on learner qualities on the left side and to give a general picture of academic progress on the right.  In the comments section, both teachers and parents have the opportunity to be specific about student performance and/or to set up a conference.  This document is issued at day 30 of each trimester.

Warning Notice:  This document is available to teachers to be used on a very limited basis with individual students who are failing to demonstrate a minimum achievement, at any time during the trimester, considering all assignments and demonstrations.

Parent Handbook: The purpose of this handbook is to briefly expand upon the information included on the report card, providing parents with a deeper understanding of reporting on achievement in a standards-based system.  The handbook serves parents in the same way the Teacher Guidebook serves teachers.

Teacher Guidebook:  The Teacher Guidebook contains information and examples that support the effective use of the district report card.
