9035: PARENT ALERT

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures, protocols and directives which bring focus and direction regarding the advising of parents when a predator or danger exists for children while walking and/or playing on their way to/from school, riding on the bus, or on the playground.

POLICY:

A threat and/or danger shall be determined to exist when an incident or issue involving a predator or alleged predator has been identified as existing in the area and such a condition has been verified by the Police Department. Upon such notice, t he Superintendent’s office shall publish a notice, including the identification of the issue, likely location, and the potential threat upon children, and have it distributed to the appropriate building administrators and PTA presidents.

Building principals, with the support and cooperation of their PTA presidents and local PTA parents/guardians, shall develop and provide to the Superintendent’s office, a completed letter (see AD 9035) which shall be sent home for the purpose of discretely informing parents of the effected schools.

AD 9035

The purpose of this Administrative Directive is to fulfill the expectations established by School Committee policy regarding the threat to children as determined to exist in the community. The following procedures will take place in the event of such an occurrence:

1. The alleged individual, if an employee of the Coventry Public Schools, will be removed from service immediately upon notification pending an investigation into the allegation to ensure no potential harm to students.

2. The Superintendent’s office will contact the appropriate law enforcement officials to determine if an investigation has determined the truth or falsity of a threat to the safety of students.

3. The Superintendent will issue a notice to parents/guardians of the appropriate school(s) within a timely manner regarding the general notification of the issue and recommend that any matters or concerns be promptly brought to the attention of the Superintendent through the building principal.

4. In the event of being informed of a level two (or higher) sex offender in the community, the community will be provided with the necessary contact information to inform all families through the police, as required by law.

The purpose of this letter/email is to inform you that, recently, an incident occurred within the _________ school neighborhood that involved an alleged adult misconduct.

The Coventry Police Department has been informed of the incident and is handling the case.

Student safety is of primary concern to the Coventry Public Schools. It is our fervent desire that due diligence and appropriate response regarding the welfare of all our children retain the highest priority.

If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact your child’s school’s principal, the Superintendent’s office or the police department.
