1100: PUBLIC RECORDS
The Coventry School Committee is a public servant, and its meetings and records
will be matters of public information, subject to such restrictions as are set
by federal law or regulation, by state statute, or by pertinent court rulings.
The official minutes of the Committee, its written policies, and its financial
records will be open for inspection at the office of the Superintendent by any
citizen desiring to examine them during hours when the office of the
Superintendent is open. However, no records will be released for inspection by
the public or any unauthorized persons - either by the Superintendent or any
other person designated as custodian for the Coventry School District records -
if such disclosure would be contrary to the public interest, as described in
state law.
The people's right to know the process of government decision-making and the
documents and statistics leading to determinations is basic to our society.
Access to such information should not be thwarted by shrouding it with the cloak
of secrecy or confidentiality.
The Superintendent shall promulgate procedures by which records may be obtained
from the school district and said procedures are hereby incorporated into this
policy by reference. Said procedures shall be available to the public at all
schools in the District and the Administrative Office and District personnel
will furnish to the public the information and records required by the Freedom
of Information Act, as well as records otherwise available by law according to
these procedures.
