1090: SCHOOL CALENDAR
The purpose of this policy shall be to provide for the appropriate and timely
establishment of a school calendar for each ensuring school year.
PHILOSOPHY:
The School Committee recognizes that many factors are involved and/or are
impacted by the establishment and implementation of a school calendar. Included
among these factors are: the need for assurance that an established calendar is
designed so as to reasonably fit the communities’ family needs, parent work
schedules, student activities and relationships with state and local school
districts, especially those with whom the Coventry schools work most closely.
POLICY STATEMENT:
To assure the establishment of an appropriate school calendar for each ensuing
school year the School Committee sets forth the following expectations:
1. The Superintendent of Schools shall submit a proposed calendar for the
ensuing school year to the School Committee preceding public review.
2. The proposed school calendar for each ensuing year shall be submitted to the
School Committee for preliminary committee consideration no later than at its
last scheduled meeting in the month of February.
3. The School Committee shall adopt the school calendar for the ensuing school
year at its regular meeting in March of each year.
CALENDAR CONSIDERATIONS:
In the establishment of a recommended school calendar, the Superintendent shall
take under consideration the following factors:
1. A review and consideration of the general content and configuration of the
recommended school calendar as established by the state superintendent’s
association.
2. Provision for a minimum of 180 student days of instruction, with additional
consideration to the identification of a 184 day school calendar as required by
Department of Education regulation.
3. The scheduling of specific designations within the school calendar should be
arranged so as to provide for the most soundly established time frames of
instruction as possible to enhance student learning.

by and between the school department and the teacher’s association.
6. The identification of holidays as generally recognized on a national basis,
along with any other such day(s) generally recognized by other school districts
and other dates that are deemed appropriate to the wishes/needs and best
interest of the community of Coventry as a whole.
7. Provision for parent teacher conferences.
8. Clearly defined periods of school recess that are strategically scheduled
